Posture

How you sit or stand is an important factor for many reasons. When you were growing up, you likely heard from your parents or your doctor or even a teacher that you need to stand up straight, that you should sit up straight, and that you should have good posture.

This can help you with many things in life, such as your physical condition and health as well as confidence (a person who has straight posture and squared shoulders will tend to exude more confidence than someone who slouches).

When you’re getting ready to meditate, you need to have good posture. Having good posture allows your body to function at its optimal level. You can take in air and exhale much easier when you’re sitting up straight. Your heart will have to work less to move blood throughout your body. Your internal organs will get a break from the constant slouching that you may do at the desk or in the car.

You don’t need to sit on the floor with your legs crossed, but you should focus on keeping your back straight, shoulders square, and chest open. If you feel that you’re beginning to drift over during the process, make a slight adjustment and open that chest area back up and get back into a good posture.

While you may already have good posture for the most part, you will notice that when you begin meditating and relaxing, you may begin to drift down and lose that good posture.

Throughout the meditative process, good posture will be important to help you connect the mind and body so that you can achieve the goals of this process.
